The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published recommendations on a smallpox vaccine restricted in use for people who work closely with viruses such as monkeypox. The vaccine was approved in the year 2019 to prevent smallpox and monkeypox in adults with high risk, aged 18 years and above.

Monkeypox is a mild viral infection that is endemic in certain parts of Africa. However, there are about 300 confirmed or suspected cases in about 20 countries where the virus was not prevalent earlier. The World Health Organization has asked for quick action from countries to contain the Monkeypox spread.

The CDC recommendations are intended for clinical laboratory personnel conducting diagnostic tests for orthopoxviruses such as smallpox and monkeypox, laboratory people conducting research on the viruses, and healthcare workers who administer a vaccine or care for patients infected with orthopoxviruses.
